PHOTOSYNTHESIS

2.JPG

ENDOTHERMIC PROCESS!

         Absorbs energy from surroundings

Photosynthesis or 'carbon fixing' - first step of life (an inorganic compound is transformed into an organic compound

Photolysis - Splitting of water molecules

Short wavelength

LIGHT DEPENDENT

Uses light energy to generate ATP and split water molecule to make H+ ions.

LIGHT INDEPENDENT

Uses ATP and H+ ions to 'fix' CO2, making C6H12O6.

*Plants appear green because they contain chloroplast, which contains the pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs all light except green light (which it reflects), making plants appear green.

  • Oxygen is the waste product.

  • Larger molecules have more bonds, take more energy to build, thus they can act as energy stores.

STARCH

- Contains 1-4 glycocidic linkage

- Also called amylose, broken down by enzyme AMYLASE

- Straight chain structure (alpha glucose); cellulose is branched chain structure (structural support in plants)

"CHLOROPHYLL IS THE MAIN PHOTOSYNTHESIS PIGMENT"

RATE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

- Change in biomass

- CO2 uptake

- O2 production

FACTORS AFFECTING PHOTOSYNTHESIS

1) Light Intensity

2) Humidity

3) Temperature

4) CO2 concentration

5) pH
